Pallas slope angle map
The Pallas fells in Muonio, Finland, rise to 809 m at Taivaskero. The fells, hotel and ski area are all inside Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. On the slope angle map the west sides of the fells are mostly uncoloured or blue 20–24°; the east-side gorges, Pyhäkuru above all, show the 30° and steeper classes.

How steep is the terrain around Pallas?
Around the Taivaskero summit about a fifth of the terrain is 20° or steeper on the map, mostly on the east side; the north and west sides have little colour. The Laukukero ski area is about a quarter coloured, mostly blue 20–24°, with 30–34° only in short sections; pistes and natural fell slopes are coloured alike. East of Taivaskero, the horseshoe-shaped walls of the Pyhäkuru gorge stand out: about three quarters of the terrain is 20° or steeper, over two fifths 30° or steeper, and 45° and steeper appears in short sections. Over half the ground on the east sides of Lehmäkero and Palkaskero is coloured; south of Rihmakuru almost a quarter is 30° or steeper.
Planning a trip to Pallas: zones, access rules and slope angle
Unlike at Ylläs, the whole area, hotel and ski area included, is inside Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. You may move freely on foot and on skis outside restriction zones, but camp only next to huts, kota shelters and lean-tos; cycling is banned on Palkaskero. Further north on the Hetta–Pallas trail, the Suaskuru and Pahakuru–Hannukuru restriction zones are closed all year, as is Hanhivuoma south of the fells. In winter the Metsähallitus Pallastunturi Gate at the trailhead shows the avalanche forecast and a slope steepness map and has a checkpoint for testing an avalanche transceiver.
Where to check the avalanche forecast for Pallas
Pallas lies in the Ounas-Pallas region of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) avalanche forecast, issued from December or January to late April for unmanaged natural slopes, not pistes; Pallas has no local forecast. Luontoon.fi calls a steep-walled gorge floor a typical runout zone.
- Finnish Meteorological Institute: avalanche forecast
- Finnish Meteorological Institute: background on avalanche warnings in Lapland
- Luontoon.fi (Metsähallitus): avalanche safety for hikers (in Finnish)
This map is not an avalanche forecast or a safety assessment: base your decisions on the official forecast, the weather and what you see on site.
How to read the slope classes
The colours start at 20°; the six classes are listed below. Terrain with no colour is below 20° or a gap in the source data. The map gives no point values: compare each colour with the legend, and zoom in, because when zoomed out each pixel shows the steepest value in the area it covers.
- 20–24° blue
- 25–29° light green
- 30–34° yellow
- 35–39° orange
- 40–44° red
- ≥45° magenta
